There’s a new app that allows you to get “spa treatment” on-demand. The Zeel Massage app, which will launch on the Southside on Wednesday, advertises itself as “on-demand massage therapy,” bringing licensed therapists to your home, office and pretty much anywhere in between. The company, which already provides massage therapy in more than 80 cities across the country, will serve residents and tourists in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Hampton and Newport News. They offer a variety of different services including Swedish massages, deep tissue, sports, sleep, prenatal and even couples sessions. “The Virginia Beach/Norfolk area is a thriving area year-round, with many residents and visitors that can benefit from on-demand massage therapy,” Zeel Chief Marketing Officer Cynthia Irons wrote in an email. “We’re excited to bring spa-quality massages directly to our customers at home, and also to vacationers at hotels.” How it works Zeel operates by connecting local therapists, who are “licensed, insured, experienced, and vetted in person by the Zeel team,” to customers in need of a massage in their operating area. For the customer, requesting a massage is as simple as downloading the app, or going to the website. From there, you select the preferred gender of your therapist, the time, location and type of massage you would like, and the job is done. Once your massage is booked, the app will send you a confirmation that shows your therapist’s full name, photo, bio, and license number so you know exactly who’s coming to your door. After that, your therapist will arrive, complete with “everything you need to turn your living room into a spa,” including the massage table, lotion and music, according to a Zeel news release. A massage can be booked in 60, 75, and 90-minute sessions, from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., 365 days a year. On the Southside, a one-hour massage costs $105.02, which includes tax and an 18 percent tip, according to Zeel’s website. Members can get massages at a reduced rate of $87.32 for an hour-long massage. “The health advantages of massage are almost endless,” she said. “Massage therapy is a pillar of wellness, with benefits that include stress relief, improved overall fitness, increased flexibility, better circulation and injury prevention.”

Zeel Networks Inc., an on-demand massage provider, has closed $10 million of a $12 million Series A round. The funding comes as the service, which is available in 20 cities, is slated to expand into three more areas. Zeel plans to launch in Phoenix, Austin and Seattle on Monday. Emil Capital Partners led the round, which has participation from Slow Ventures, Partech Ventures, New Atlantic Ventures and Spafinder. The company didn’t disclose its valuation but has raised $15 million to date. Zeel took a circuitous path to its on-demand massages business. When the company first launched in 2010, its founders envisioned it would be a service like ZocDoc but for alternative medicine. Instead the team quickly noticed half the bookings the company received were for massages. They also observed that more than 50 % of the 25,000 bookings they received were for massages in the next four hours. As the team pivoted into on-demand massages, it moved to address concerns of customers and practitioners. The company also thought it could get the best therapists if it could provide them a feeling of security. The app requires customers to prove their true identity using a social security number or a scan of a government-issued ID. Zeel Chief Executive Samer Hamadeh said this discourages bad behavior among clients. “The whole industry was screaming for a service to do this,” Mr. Hamadeh said. Unlike other on-demand services, the Zeel app also lets customers know how much of the amount they paid actually goes to the therapist. Mr. Hamadeh said this encourages customer loyalty because they know the therapists are paid well on the platform. Zeel is one of several companies that have realized there is a large market for on-demand massages in the home. Mr. Hamadeh said he knows of at least a dozen startups in the category. Soothe Inc. raised $35 million in Series B funding earlier this month. Soothe also acquired competitor Unwind Me in the fall. Correction: A previous version of this article said Zeel raised $11.5 million to date. The company has raised $15 million to date.
