About Facials

Skincare is a frustrating matter for many, and it's no wonder. There are countless uncontrollable factors that affect the quality of your skin, like weather, hormones, stress, and genetics. A facial is a good way to cleanse and refresh your skin (and sometimes your neck and shoulders too).

This common spa (and occasionally medical) treatment can be customized to address your individual facial concerns, whether your skin is oily, pimply, flaky, or just plain dull. A facial can minimize enlarged pores, reduce breakouts, heal acne scars, and rehydrate your skin. Traditional facials frequently include a steam treatment, exfoliation, extractions, a facial mask, and a face, neck, and shoulder massage.

Besides the classic facial, you may also come across specialty facials with hot stones, luxurious fragrances, and even electrical currents. Novel procedures are constantly being introduced into the cosmetic market, like the decidedly outlandish diamond, bird dropping, and caviar facials. Most of these unusual treatments are entirely unproven, though they certainly attract attention.

Types of Facials

Oxygen Facial

The oxygen facial makes use of a handheld device that sprays the skin with spurts of pure oxygen. The oxygen facial is intended to hydrate the skin. The specialized device also delivers a moist serum loaded with vitamins, minerals, and collagen. Some oxygen facials begin with a light microdermabrasion. Though popular on the celebrity circuit, there is little scientific evidence to support the efficacy of the oxygen facial.

Microdermabrasion Facial

The microdermabrasion facial is a good choice if you can't decide between a microdermabrasion and a facial. The surface of the skin is first exfoliated using microdermabrasion, using sand or crystal particles to remove dead skin cells and smooth skin unevenness. This combined treatment may help individuals with mild acne, and can leave the skin brighter and cleaner.

Hot Stone Facial

During a hot stone facial, smooth, heated basalt stones (a fine-grained, hard rock that forms when lava cools) are strategically placed on the face. Also referred to as "thermotherapy," hot stone facial stones radiate heat to relax the underlying tissues of the face and open up your pores. Fragrant oils are often applied during this type of facial.

Microcurrent / Galvanic Facial

A microcurrent facial utilizes low-level electrical impulses, which are directed towards specific pressure points on the face to stimulate the underlying facial muscles. The device, which uses extremely mild galvanic current, is considered safe, though there is little scientific evidence that it works.

Mini Facial

Mini facials differ from spa to spa and typically include a smaller selection of the offerings of a traditional, full-length facial. A mini facial can include steam treatment, exfoliation, extractions, hydration masks, or a light massage. A mini facial lasts 30 to 50 minutes.
