The Tracy Anderson Method is based on an exercise regimen created by personal trainer to the stars Tracy Anderson. Since not everyone can make it to one of Anderson's LA- or NYC-based gyms, she developed what has become known in the fitness world as the Tracy Anderson Method.

The workout is broken up into two segments; half is dedicated to aerobic dance and the rest is reserved for strength training and stretching. Many of the movements draw from Pilates.

Benefits of Tracy Anderson Method: Because the workouts are available on DVD, the Tracy Anderson Method is cost-effective and convenient. Workouts are completed using three-pound weights, or no weights at all. The method encourages participants to complete a high number of repetitions using light resistance. According to Anderson's theories (but certainly not all trainers'), this is meant to avoid bulking up biceps and other muscle groups.

Who Tracy Anderson Method is best for: The Tracy Anderson Method is geared towards ladies who love working out and staying physically fit. The exercises are intended to transform the female form so it appears lean and muscular, and Anderson insists that anyone can achieve a "teeny tiny dancer's body" using her techniques.

Tracy Anderson's method should be performed six days a week for a minimum of 60 minutes. There are no excuses for skipping a day. Workout routines change every 10 days to avoid muscle memory (the DVDs are broken down into a variety of routines to make this possible).

Getting ready: Anderson insists on warming up before diving into some of the more grueling parts of the workout. Warm-ups mainly consist of various stretches. Anderson's pupils then gradually build up to more vigorous movements. Wear fitted, comfortable clothing like leggings that allow you to be light on your toes.

Calories burned: The Tracy Anderson Method doesn't ask its participants to count the number of calories burned while working out, though that doesn't stop many from trying. Some of Anderson's pupils claim to have burned 300 to 600 calories during the 40-minute cardio segment alone.

Really, the number of calories burned during a workout will differ from one person to the next. Participants are encouraged to supplement their daily workouts with healthy eating habits in order to facilitate weight loss. Tracy Anderson recommends low-cal, low-fat, low-carb meals. Alcohol is not part of this method either.

Celebrity Devotees

Tracy Anderson has received plenty of media hype for toning Madonna's biceps and making Gwyneth Paltrow's long, lean figure even longer and leaner. But those aren't the only A-listers who are hooked on her method. Other celebrity clients who have enlisted Anderson's undivided attention include Sarah Jessica Parker, Penelope Cruz, and Shakira. The Columbian singer is known to call on Anderson when preparing to shoot a music video.

Risks

The Tracy Anderson Method is considered a safe and effective workout. Drink plenty of water while performing the exercises, and stretch after to avoid muscle injury.

Who shouldn't do it: Knee injuries may inhibit certain movements, such as plie-like lunges and squats. Beginners should gradually work their way into the routines, building up the number of repetitions they can achieve with each workout.
