South Beach Diet

While some diets eliminate carbohydrates altogether, the South Beach Diet does neither. The South Beach Diet seeks to simply replace "bad" carbs and fats with ones that are "good" for you.

Side Effects & Risks

Some nutritionists have questioned whether there really is a link between the glycemic index and diabetes. Others have argued that the weight loss during the first phase of the diet is only water weight. If, during the induction phase, the weight loss comes from water, it may be possible to destabilize your electrolyte balance.

Vegetarian Disadvantage

Vegetarians may not lose weight as quickly as non-vegetarians during the first two phases, though the pounds will eventually begin to drop.

Initial Fatigue

In addition to the aforementioned risks, the South Beach Diet can send the body into a state of ketosis, where fat is burned in place of carbohydrates (since there are fewer carbs to burn). This can oftentimes result in weakness, nausea and dizziness.
