Treatment Basics

Regulatory approval: Approved by the FDA in December 2006.

Radiesse is a semi-solid implant injected into the skin via needle to fill unwanted wrinkles and lines around the nose and mouth. The artificial substance is made of a calcium-rich compound that plumps up the skin wherever desired - usually inside the nasolabial folds, or in sunken cheeks. Almost 200,000 Radiesse injections were completed in 2009.

What It's Good For

Radiesse is typically injected in the lines around the mouth, where the deepest facial wrinkles are commonly found. It's also used to treat pre-jowls, and cheek depressions - signs of aging that result from fat loss. Because of the filler's relatively thick nature when compared to other injectables, Radiesse is not suitable around the eyes and in the lips.
