Side Effects & Risks
Because the Paleo Diet contains many animal products, it may be contraindicated for individuals with high blood pressure. Increased meat consumption can lead to an increased intake of saturated fat, and while many high-protein diets are considered safe in the short-term, the long-term risks may include an increased likelihood of heart disease and stroke.
The main source of fiber on the Paleo Diet is found in vegetables and fruit. Individuals who tend to eat more meat and less produce while following the diet may not consume sufficient amounts of fiber, which can result in digestive disorders, stomach cramps and painful gas.
A lack of milk (and all other dairy products) can cause a calcium deficiency. With age, this can lead to osteoporosis. To prevent this, it is important for dieters to either take supplements or to consume calcium-rich vegetables such as spinach and other leafy green delectables.
The emphasis on meat may also be challenging for vegan or vegetarian dieters. It may be possible to enrich your diet using supplements to obtain the necessary sources of protein. As with any diet, it may be a good idea to consult a certified nutritionist before making any dietary changes.
