Treatment Basics

Other names: adult braces, behind-the-teeth braces

Lingual braces are fastened to the insides - or the "lingual" side - of your teeth and are hidden from view. Like traditional braces, lingual braces use a system of brackets and wires to apply continuous pressure to teeth, encouraging them to gradually shift into alignment.

Since their introduction in the 1970s, these discreet orthodontics have become popular among adults who want an improved smile without having to flaunt a mouthful of metal. Major manufacturers of lingual braces include iBraces and Incognito. Both companies design custom fit hardware that can be installed by a professional orthodontist.

What It's Good For

Lingual braces are used to straighten misaligned teeth, including those that are rotated, overcrowded or spaced too widely. Lingual braces can also correct slight overbites and other bite irregularities.

Who it works for: Lingual braces can only be applied to adult teeth. They are generally offered to adult patients and teenagers without baby teeth.

Recommended age range: Lingual braces are not recommended for patients younger than 13.

When will I see results?: The treatment time will vary from one set of teeth to the next. Improvements can typically be seen within nine months to three years.

Key benefits of lingual braces: Lingual braces can straighten crooked teeth without producing a so-called "tin grin."
