The mineral iron is essential to health. Iron is found in every cell in the body and assists with the flow of oxygen to your tissue and muscle.

What Iron Does For The Body

Iron delivers oxygen to the various muscles and tissues in the body. When iron levels are low, you become anemic. Anemia results in the loss of energy and appetite.

What happens if you don't have enough iron: Iron deficiencies are actually quite common. Known as anemia, an iron deficit limits the amounts of oxygen that can be delivered to the cells. This results in fatigue, poor work performance and a weakened immune system. Anemic individuals may also feel perpetually cold.

According to The World Health Organization, about 30 percent of the world's population may be at least slightly anemic, making it the world's most common nutritional disorder.

What happens if you have too much: It's pretty tough to get too much iron, since your body naturally keeps your iron levels in check by regulating how much is absorbed. Individuals who do manage to end up with a surplus of iron have a genetic condition known as hemochromatosis.

When excess iron is absorbed into the blood, the results can be very dangerous, even fatal. Symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, weight loss and a graying complexion.
