IPL laser (photofacial)

IPL lasers shoot pulsed (not continuous) light at the skin to destroy unwanted cells.

I had my first IPL treatment yesterday. Today my face is covered in brown spots and patches.

After IPL, superficial brown spots (age spots, freckles) will become more brown to black and maybe, dry or flaky and will eventually flake away after several days to several weeks. The more brown spots you have the more this will be noticeable. So, this is usually normal. However, some people with darker skin types will develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after an IPL; a condition characterized by excessive pigmentation related to the subtle injury or trauma to the skin by IPL or laser; which we usually treat with a fading cream and sunblock. In general, after IPL, we recommend a gentle soap-free cleanser, such as Cetaphil or Aquanil and a non-chemical based sunblock, such as Vanicream 60 once to twice daily for several days or more until your skin is normal. Thereafter, an anti-aging topical skin care program is recommended. Please refer to the Photofacial page of our website at Also, I would advise returing to your treating physician for an evaluation should you have any concerns.
