Why can't I use toothpaste to clean my teeth with Invisalign?
Brian Gray (Washington, DC) on Aug 3, 2011
You can. Certain things might cloud the plastic, but I have yet to see any toothpaste do that in the 11 years I have been using and teaching Invisalign.

You can use toothpaste to clean your teeth during Invisalign treatment. If you are using a very abrasive toothpaste like a whitening toothpaste, we would recommend you not brush the actual aligners or trays with the toothpaste. You can just use your toothbrush and water to gently brush the trays and remove debris. I hope that answers your question.

You certainly can use toothpaste to clean your TEETH during Invisalign aligner therapy. Perhaps your dentist recommended not to use toothpaste on your ALIGNERS. I do not like toothpaste on the aligners because it is abrasive and can cause more staining of the trays. It is possible there was some miscommunication. I hope that helps! Good luck.

You can use toothpaste to clean your teeth while under treatment with Invisalign. You should not use toothpaste on the Invisalign aligners as the abrasives in toothpaste will scratch the aligners which will hasten the discoloration of them. Les Latner, DDS

When you take off the aligners you can brush your teeth as usual with toothpaste. However, brushing your aligners (the trays) is not recommended as you will roughen the surface of the aligners and then accumulate more bacteria and the aligners may appear "cloudy". It is better to clean them with a denture cleaner, or check out the Invisalign website for their recommended cleaning products.
