Essential fatty acids

Essential fatty acids are fatty acids that are required by the body but that cannot be manufactured by the body (and therefore must be consumed).

Essential Fatty Acids Foods & Sources

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the most common linolenic acid, is found primarily in seed oils and green vegetables. A tablespoon of flaxseed oil contains 47 percent of the recommended daily dosage of ALAs. Other good sources include walnuts, canola oil, pumpkin, tofu and soybean oil.

Linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated fatty acid also found in seed oils. The richest source of linoleic acid is safflower oil—one tablespoon has 78 percent of the recommended daily dose.

Other good oil sources include grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, walnut oil, and sesame oil.
