Colon cleansing is based on the theory that the colon (also called the large intestine) can trap bacteria, feces and other toxins, which adversely affect health.

A colon cleanse may involve taking oral supplements and laxatives along with a liquid diet, or it may require mechanically flushing out the contents of the colon with water.

Who invented it: The colon cleanse supposedly originated with the ancient Egyptians, though it regained popularity in the late 19th century in America with the the theory of colonic autointoxication—the notion that undigested food and wastes products poison the body over time. Scientific research has since debunked this theory.

Length of diet plan: Most colon cleanses are about a day or two in length.
