Will acupuncture help post op pain from shoulder surgery?

Annie Porter (Scottsdale, AZ) on Dec 1, 2012
Anytime a surgery is performed, minor trauma occurs and in Chinese Medicine, this is known as blood stasis. When a patient's blood is not flowing properly, there will be pain. Acupuncture works very well on post-operative pain. It works by invigorating the flow of qi and blood in the channels of the shoulder and in the areas that have incurred trauma. Also, an herb called 'Turmeric' has been well documented to decrease inflammation and it has an affinity for the shoulder joint.

Acupuncture is great to reduce inflammation and relieve pain! It is completely safe to have done post-op! It may also help speed the healing process! The introduction of a sterile needle into the skin sends a message to the immune system that a "foreign body" is present and kicks up your immune properties to help you heal and reduce swelling and pain.
Sejin Lee (Fullerton, CA) on Oct 16, 2012

Using traditional acupuncture and local electroacupuncture, we can significantly relieve or eliminate your pain. In addition, electroacupuncture will help the area heal much more rapidly than without treatment. I usually also prescribe a Chinese herbal formula, "Jin Gu Die Da Wan", which means, "Tendon and Bone Healing Pill", to speed your recovery, as well.

Acupuncture can help manage pain in different areas of the body. I mainly use Chinese formula to manage post-surgical pain with good results, on a case to case basis. I would be happy to offer a free phone consultation. You can reach me at: 847-922-4039 Thank you, Adi Barad, LAc.

Acupuncture helped me so much that my orthopedist sends me many shoulder patients. I was expected to lose 15 degrees of rotation, and be on pain killers for 3 months. With the use of acupuncture, I regained all of my range of motion and only needed pain killers for less than one week. Acupuncture increases beta-endorphins, which relieve pain; and increase serum ACTH, which is a precursor to Cortisol, which reduces inflammation. In addition, it increases several components of the immune system that are responsible for clearing out damaged tissue (phagocytes, t-cells, b-cell, lymphocytes). I would definitely recommend acupuncture for all post-surgical recovery.
Alyssa Dazet (Santa Monica, CA) on Oct 2, 2012
Most definitely! Surgery is very traumatic to the body and can cause chaos with in the pain system. Often times the nervous system and brain signals get "shut off" in an area of surgery. Acupuncture helps to open up the channels of communication again, which in turn relieves the pain. It will also help to bring blood flow to the shoulder, which also helps to relieve a lot of post-op pain. Let me know if you have any more questions, I'm happy to help! Alyssa Dazet L.Ac.

Sorry to hear about your post-op pain, but acupuncture is a great option to help reduce or eliminate pain. I have treated post-op patients soon after in-patient surgeries in the hospital with great results. Not only will acupuncture relax you, but it facilitates healing of tissues and internal and external structures. I would definitely recommend it!
Ta-Li Chang (La Habra, CA) on Oct 2, 2012
Acupuncture is definitely great for post surgery. Acupuncture is not only good for local area pain relief. It is also great for distance pain relief by choosing acupuncture point on the same channel/meridian/path as the pain location. it's very less likely to have infection of the since the insertion of needles is away from the surgery area.
Eden Lung (San Diego, CA) on Oct 2, 2012

Acupuncture and Asian Medicine are very helpful for any type of post opt surgery pain. Why, most likely the energy channels have been cut through in that area causing blockages of energy around the scar tissue, which may also cause referral pain. Which relates to inflammation in Western medicine, and that causes pain. Acupuncture releases the inflammation without drug therapy and the pain stops both at the site and any referring pain!

Acupuncture is extremely beneficial for post-op pain from shoulder surgery. We have various strategies to choose from; in one we place the pins distally (at a distance) from the surgery site; later, if there is a scar, we may do scar therapy to lessen or eliminate any lingering pain due to disrupted and damaged connective tissue.
