I've had acupuncture done twice and it's VERY VERY painful to me and afterwards I'm very sore. Is this normal?
Aram Akopyan (Glendale, CA) on Jan 30, 2012
Some discomfort during and after a treatment is normal. However, significant pain is not a normal response to treatment. Your pain may be due to the needle sizes or the application methods used. Try alternative approaches, including gua sha, cupping, or even Tui Na. There is also Piezo needling, which does not use actual needles. .

I'm sorry to hear that. There are many different styles to acupuncture. Some are more gentle than others. The needles can also feel painful depending upon the gauge, or size, or the needle. My style is more on the gentle side and uses thinner needles.

The needles used for acupuncture are very thin (.25 mm in diameter). When the needles are inserted through the skin, patients usually do not feel any pain or feel only very slight pain. When the needles reach the acu-points and the Qi is stimulated by needle manipulation, the patient may feel some soreness, numbness, distention or heaviness around the acu-points, or feel a kind of sensation traveling up or down the meridian, the bodyâ''s energy-carrying channels. Such feelings usually are the sign of effective treatment.

Yes and no. No, it is not the "norm". And yes, if you are in the 2% of people who cannot tolerate the needles for a variety of reasons. Not knowing your physical condition, it is hard to give you an answer as to why you experience acupuncture this way. You might be better served with acupressure, moxabustion, and cupping. Herbal liniments and infra-red heat are other therapies you can explore to relieve your pain. Get a personal referral to a good acupuncturist and try again.
