Acupuncture has the ability to alleviate pain by facilitating the movement of energy and blood. However, every situation is unique.

You will almost always feel immediate pain relief from an acupuncture treatment. How long it lasts is the real question. That depends on several factors, including how chronic the pain was, the type of pain (joint, muscle or neurologic) and the post-treatment regimen. In our clinic we have a saying, "Come in hunched over and leave bouncing."
Vanessa McKay (Orangeburg, NY) on Mar 27, 2012
Pain relief can vary for many reasons. The more chronic the issue, the longer treatment will take. Acute conditions can usually be resolved in four to six treatments.

Unlike Western medicine, Eastern alternative medicine is not a ";quick fix."; The pain relief may range from a few days after the treatment to only a couple of minutes. The point of acupuncture is to balance the enitre body over time so that the actual root cause of the pain will be cured causing the pain to cease in the future. Acupuncture is not a pain pill which simply blocks the information from the brain. The treatment is cumulative. We usually suggest starting with a course of 10 treatments to see how the body responds and go from there.

Pain relief can be instantaneous in many cases. In most cases patients notice incremental lessening of pain with each treatment. It really depends on the nature of the pain, what caused it, age and overall health of the patient.
Adam Graves (Castle Rock, CO) on Mar 27, 2012
It depends on the severity and location of pain. Usually about 40% of patients experience pain relief after the first treatment, another 40% experience pain relief after 8 treatments. The final 20% have mixed results.
Sandy Root (New York, NY) on Mar 27, 2012
The time of pain relief from acupuncture depends partly on whether the pain is acute or chronic. A chronic problem could take more treatments, but it's also not infrequent that patients do have some pain relief after their first treatment. Each treatment has a cumulative effect, so as treatments continue, relief should get better and better. A consultation is the best way to give a time-frame as each patient is different, and is treated differently depending on the pain they are presenting with, and other factors based on their constitution.
