Preparing for Your First in-Home Massage

Over the past year, I've gotten really into podcasts - inspirational, non-fiction stories, and political - but what I've noticed most among all podcasts, the advertisements that talk about in-home massages you can order from your phone. An Uber for massages, if you will. I have been dying to book one of these appointments, but the timing was just never right. Until the past weekend, when the mom stars aligned with both my mom in town visiting and my husband off from work, so I booked myself a Zeel massage. I was surprised how nervous I was feeling prior to my massage - probably because I have a super friendly, but super excitable, 70lb black lab so inviting someone into my home is always a little risky, especially if they don't like dogs. Luckily Zeel lets you select the pets you have at the time of booking so the therapist is prepared (or can avoid homes with pets). My therapist, Jen*, arrived a little before 10 and thankfully, loved dogs. Although she was probably less impressed when my lab bursted into my spare bedroom while she was setting up the massage table. That's right therapists show up with their own table and all you need are 2 sheets and a pillow case. Plus instead of getting dressed and driving to a spa, I was able to hangout in my PJs all morning (always a major win in my book). My husband was watching my son, so I was worried I wouldn't be able to relax; to my surprise, it was actually easier to relax and unwind knowing my son was just a room away if he needed me. Yes, I could hear the occasional giggle, but Jen's spa music blocked out most of the noise. I was beyond impressed with how simple the entire process was. Plus because there was no commuting involved, I could do this again and only have to pay for childcare for an hour, instead of 2 or 3. I will definitely be booking another Zeel soon, in fact I've already booked a post Holiday one for my husband as a surprise...shhhhhh! If you haven't booked yourself a Zeel yet - do it immediately and here are some tips that will help you prepare for your first one. 1. Give yourself 30 minutes prior to your therapist arriving. Take some time to get sheets read, get into something more comfortable, and mentally prepare to relax (I know that sounds crazy, but it's actually super helpful). 2. Prepare your sheets. It's actually awesome getting to have a massage in your own sheets. Make sure you have your softest set washed and ready for extra comfort. 3. Think about special requests while booking. My therapist told me that in the future, I can always request that a therapist texts my cell phone rather than ring the door bell. Great to know for parents and pet owners. 4. Bring some cash. There is a tip included at the time of booking the app, but it's always nice to have a little cash on hand when the therapist goes above and beyond. Inviting someone into your home to give you a massage means it's nearly impossible to not form some type of personal connection - which makes the massage even better and more tipworthy. 5. Think about a nighttime massage. I sometimes have trouble falling asleep at night. My therapist suggested in the future, I could book a massage in the evening, after my son was in bed, to help me unwind before bed. 6. Share with your friends. Zeel, like other on demand apps, rewards you with credit for encouraging a friend to book a massage with a special promo code. It's as easy as sending a text and you only need 5 to earn enough credits to have a free massage.
