Gastric Band for Excess Weight

Gastric banding is a surgical procedure. An inflatable band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach. It is intended for aggressive weight loss, and it is the second most common weight loss procedure next to gastric bypass. After surgery, the stomach shrinks considerably–enough to hold no more than six ounces of food.

Gastric banding can result in about a 40% loss of excess weight and has a lower complication rate than gastric bypass surgery. Gastric banding costs $14,000 to $18,000.
