Surgical treatments: Moles can make your skin into an obstacle course when shaving, but aside from convenience, the only true reason to remove a non-cancerous mole is for cosmetic purposes. Shave excision can be performed on smaller moles. This is a method in which the area around the growth is numbed, and a small blade is used to cut around and beneath the mole.

Excisional surgery also removes the mole from underneath, however this technique makes use of a scalpel or sharp punching device (like a miniature cookie cutter) to extract the growth. Shave excision doesn't require stitches, but excisional surgery does involve a needle and thread. If sutures aren't used, a tool can be used to burn the area and stanch any bleeding.
