Keloids (scars)

People who have had keloids, or suspect they might have a genetic predisposition to them, should avoid piercings, elective surgeries, or any other procedure that could cause scarring.

Product treatments: Silicone sheets have been proven to reduce the itchiness and pain of keloids; their manufacturers also argue that silicone can reduce the size of the scars. The sheets prevent water from evaporating off of the scar, keeping it hydrated, which decreases the flow of blood to the area, thus slowing the growth of collagen.

Compression bandages, worn for long periods of time (23 hours a day for six months to a year), can make keloids thinner and their tissues more pliable.
