Spider veins are caused by dilated blood vessels. They create a network of red lines on the forehead, nose, cheeks, eyelids, neck, or upper chest. Facial spider veins form when the elastic fibers located in blood vessel walls weaken.
Spider veins are common in fair-skinned women. It is also common for individuals with rosacea. Age and genetics are the main sources of facial spider veins, yet these straggly vessels are also subject to excess sun exposure, hormonal changes, liver disease, and vein trauma.
Age range: Facial spider veins usually appear around the age of 40.
