How To Make More Money With A Flexible Schedule: Lucy’s Massage Therapist Journey

Zeel massage therapist journey

After I picked up my first few massage appointments with Zeel, I was like… “Why isn’t every massage therapist doing this?!” With Zeel I made more money in two 90 minute massages then I did with six full massages in a spa. I could take a massage or two in the day and have the rest of the day to cook, clean, or simply spend time with my family, and not feel like I gave all my energy away at work.”

Meet Lucy, a massage therapist from Zeel's network

“A handful of my massage therapist friends have reached out to ask me how I like working with Zeel and I always tell them to give it a shot! It could become your primary source of income, or at the very least doing one massage a week will significantly help you reach your next financial goal. Why pick up an entire extra shift at a spa when you can just take on one appointment and actually enjoy your day off?”

Have you ever wondered how other massage therapists got their start and built a profitable career?

We all love a behind-the-scenes peek at someone’s life, so we’re bringing you the real-life journey of some of our talented bodyworkers with the “My Massage Therapy Journey” series.

Rather than us answering the question, “what’s it like to work for Zeel?” we’re letting our therapists do the talking.

Today, we couldn’t be more excited to bring you the story of Lucy S., a skilled bodyworker in California.

we’re letting our therapists do the talking

We know you’ll love hearing her share how she grew a massage therapy clientele that finally paid her bills while giving her time off to travel, so we’ll let Lucy give you all the details in her own words…

Lucy, tell us your background and how you got started in massage.

Lucy: It’s crazy to say that I’ve been practicing massage therapy for 7 years now. I remember when colleagues would tell me they had been massaging for 7 or 8 years – I couldn’t even grasp the concept of it. Time has really flown by!

This career in bodywork found me when I wasn’t looking for it. My entire life I knew I wanted a helping career – in health, but not particularly in a hospital. While in college studying Psychology, I learned about myself and discovered from within that empathy required connecting to others with more than just words. I wanted to do just that, and that’s how I found massage.

Although I love the pampering of a spa style relaxation massage, I specialize in Deep Tissue bodywork, particularly in the upper extremities. I like blending Deep Sports Massage techniques with the fluffiness of a spa wrap to give an overall sense of healing and stress relief.

I have worked for employers, as a contractor, and for myself, and now incorporating Zeel as one of the main components of my career.

Wow, from studying psychology in college to working as an employee and contractor, you’ve done it all! Where did you do bodywork before you started working with Zeel?

Lucy: Before Zeel I was working at a luxury Spa in Santa Monica and also had a handful of private clients I would see every week.

I was struggling with the physical pain from performing 5-6 massages a day. Financially, it didn’t feel fair to me that I would go home feeling completely drained, even with plenty of self-care, and still only have just enough money to get by.

While working as a spa employee I absolutely loved the people I worked with and the knowledge I gained, but sometimes it just didn’t feel like it was enough for the amount of work and exhaustion my body was going through.

Along with the physical pain, I was enduring from performing 5 to 6 massages a day, I was struggling financially. It didn’t feel fair to me that I would go home feeling completely drained, even with plenty of self-care, and still only have just enough money to get by. Many of the therapists I worked with wouldn’t take advantage of the free massages we would get as part of our benefits because we simply didn’t have money to tip our colleagues even with a free service.

I felt like my work was repetitive, and being in the same room, in the same building, 4-5 times a week was not making me happy.

How did you first hear about Zeel? What made you curious to try out working with our massage therapy app?

Lucy: A massage therapist buddy of mine referred me to Zeel in 2014.

I received a call to meet for an interview, and was taken back by how stress-free it felt with the Zeel team. I really liked being able to choose when to work, and how often. I hadn’t heard of anything in the industry like this before.

Even with my love for the spa, the reality is I’m a free bird, and I love that Zeel has taken me to new places and people each time, while simultaneously building solid client/provider relationships.

Why did you decide to give working for Zeel a shot?

Lucy: What convinced me to finally try Zeel was how personable it was from the very beginning. I was very skeptical at first about taking an in-home massage with someone I had never met before. When I did, I was surprised at how fast I was responded to, and how safe I felt knowing that someone was on the other end of the app, waiting for me to check out and tell me good night after I finished the appointment. It’s all about the little things and they went a long way!

I gained a much more flexible schedule, have built great relationships with clients, have worked in places every therapist dreams of when they sign up for this career. I’ve also made more money to travel to places I have always wanted to see!

You’ve mentioned you spend more time with your family lately; how do you maintain a healthy work/life balance? What’s your secret to staying fresh and energized for your work?

Lucy: One of my favorite things to do is hang out or workout at the beach. With Zeel, I don’t need to spend 7 or 8 hours plus commute each day to make a living. I personally like to take clients that are near the ocean. Sometimes it works out perfectly and I grab lunch by the beach and just sit out and look at the water between clients. It’s my favorite way to refresh my energy for the next client.

What do you tell friends who are curious about what it’s like working with Zeel (real talk, please!)?

How do you feel about your future as a massage therapist with Zeel?

Lucy: My journey at Zeel has been life-changing. It reassured me that I chose the right career in life and that my work helping others does not require me to hurt myself.

It has allowed me to put my health and well-being first so that I can continue to give my best energy and intentions to helping my clients.
