Can you actually make enough money to live off of while doing work that you love?
That’s the question we asked therapist Ally R., and she came right back with some really honest answers in this week’s final installment of the “My Massage Therapy Journey” interview series.
Rather than us answering the question, “what’s it like to work with Zeel?” we’re letting therapists do the talking, and they have a lot to say! In this series, they’re spilling all the details of their massage therapy careers, compensation, and obstacles they’ve faced.
We know you’ll love hearing how Ally used the Zeel platform to make more money with a flexible schedule, so we’ll let her give you all the details in her own words…
Ally, tell us how you got started in massage.
I’ve been a massage therapist for 6 years. I discovered the art of bodywork while living in Taipei, Taiwan, where I had been an English teacher for a number of years. While exploring the Taiwanese culture, I discovered traditional Chinese medicine, tuina, and acupuncture.
In Taiwan, I was amazed to learn that for just a few dollars, I could be treated in a holistic way that connected my mind and body. Needless to say, I was bewitched by the results of these natural healing practices and wanted to learn more.
When it was time to return home to the U.S., I was presented with a choice between continuing to teach or taking a new path, and I chose the path of holistic healthcare.
So your love for natural health started across the world, what an adventure! How did you first hear about Zeel?
I spent 6 months getting my Esthetician license so that I could work in a spa while completing my massage therapy license, which is a two-year process. Some of my classmates wondered “how much do massage therapists make?” but I knew the pay and hours I could expect as a therapist working in spas and gyms.
Using Zeel’s service to find good clients is a game changer. Not only does it mean new therapists can build their networks faster, but now we have freedom of movement! I can move anywhere in the country and immediately begin taking on new clients with Zeel.
I found out about Zeel and I instantly saw as a game-changing idea. They use tech to connect therapists with clients in a way that promotes safety and security.
What made you so sure about working with Zeel?
The reality is, massage therapists need to dedicate years to building a network of ideal clients. We can’t accept every person who approaches us on the street while we’re lugging our tables around. Finding enough steady, reliable clients to support a livelihood is one of the hardest aspects of this career.
That’s why using Zeel’s service to find good clients is so important. Not only does it mean therapists can build their networks faster, but now we have freedom of movement! I can move anywhere in the country and immediately begin taking on new clients through Zeel.
What has been your favorite thing about joining the Zeel platform?
I love that there are massage therapists in the Zeel office that know exactly what I’m dealing with!
One thing I’ve been able to do since working with Zeel that I couldn’t do before is turn down work! It might sound funny, but sometimes I just want to relax and making more money per client gives me the financial flexibility to turn down work when I need to rest.
I was also really happy with how quickly my massage schedule filled up working with Zeel.
You mentioned that you had a realistic idea of how much you could earn as a massage therapist when you were in massage school. Has Zeel helped you meet your income goals as well?
Yes, I’m earning more money than I expected. And one thing I’ve been able to do since working with Zeel that I couldn’t do before is turning down work! It might sound funny, but sometimes I just want to relax and making more money per client gives me the financial flexibility to turn down work when I need to rest.
How has working with Zeel changed the way you view yourself as a massage therapist? Is there anything you do differently while working with Zeel rather than a spa?
With Zeel, there’s no more up-selling! I hate treating my sessions as an opportunity to push products or gym memberships, and I don’t have to do that with Zeel clients.
I also love that Zeel does all my advertising for me. I just show up, do great work and leave.
How do you feel about your future as a massage therapist?
You know, I used to be worried about being overworked as a massage therapist. Burnout is a real danger in this industry!
But things are really different working with Zeel, and I’m not worried about burnout anymore. I’m earning more money, working flexible hours, and I have great clients who view massage with respect!
