More recently it has been discovered to affect human behavior in areas related to empathy and trust, sexual arousal, romantic attachment, and it can even reduce anxiety and aggression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oxytocin is defined by the Cleveland Clinic as a \u201cnatural hormone that manages key aspects of the female and male reproductive systems, including labor and delivery, lactation as well as aspects of human behavior.\u201d It&#8217;s produced in the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/22566-hypothalamus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hypothalamus<\/a> and secreted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/body\/21459-pituitary-gland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pituitary gland<\/a> in both men and women\u2014but in women its effects are enhanced by higher levels of estrogen. Oxytocin acts as a chemical messenger in the brain, similar to serotonin or dopamine, and is one of the few hormones with a positive feedback loop\u2014meaning that the release of it stimulates the pituitary gland to release even more! According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3537144\/?report=classic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2013 report<\/a>, the hormone is \u201can important component of a complex neurochemical system that allows the body to adapt to highly emotive situations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Low oxytocin levels have been linked to depressive symptoms and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/autism\/signs.html#:~:text=Autism%20spectrum%20disorder%20(ASD)%20is,%2C%20moving%2C%20or%20paying%20attention.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">autism spectrum disorder<\/a>. Scientists are still researching the connection between oxytocin and these conditions. Should they decode it, significant potential could be unlocked for treating autism spectrum disorder, depression, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/post-traumatic-stress-disorder\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20355967#:~:text=Post%2Dtraumatic%20stress%20disorder%20(PTSD)%20is%20a%20mental%20health,uncontrollable%20thoughts%20about%20the%20event.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">post-traumatic stress disorder <\/a>(PTSD), anxiety, addiction, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/anorexia-nervosa\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353591\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anorexia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Dr. Kerstin Uvn\u00e4s Moberg, author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/9780738207483\">The Oxytocin Factor<\/a>, <strong>massage is one of the best ways to increase oxytocin in the body<\/strong>. She writes that oxytocin is released not only in the person <em>receiving<\/em> the massage but also in the therapist. \u201cMassage therapists show typical effects of high levels of oxytocin,\u201d says Moberg, \u201csuch as <strong>lower levels of stress hormones and lower blood pressure<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Numerous studies support the beneficial effects of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeel.com\/in-home-massage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">massage<\/a> in relieving everyday stress and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeel.com\/blog\/mental-health\/research-backed-reasons-you-need-a-massage-for-your-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anxiety<\/a>, enhancing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeel.com\/blog\/massage\/benefits-of-massage\/how-massage-boosts-immunity-to-keep-you-healthy-and-strong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">immune system<\/a>, improving mood, and promoting feelings of well-being. When cortisol is produced in high levels over a long period, it can lead to lowered immune function, high blood pressure and heart rate, and even anxiety and depression. People suffering from PTSD live in a chronic state of stress and have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/the-aftermath-trauma\/201606\/cortisol-and-ptsd-part-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a> to have high levels of cortisol. Multiple studies on massage and its effects on oxytocin and cortisol production are being reviewed.
