This is particularly true for those juggling work, childcare, schooling, and daily family management all in the same environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pandemic has taken a staggering toll on the wellness of working parents, with 56% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/12\/03\/millions-of-working-mothers-in-the-us-are-suffering-from-burnout.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reporting<\/a> struggles managing work and parenting, and rates of <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2770146\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">depression<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mavenclinic.com\/lp\/parents-at-the-best-workplaces-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">burnout<\/a> ballooning among adults worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working mothers have disproportionately shouldered that burden. <strong>Moms are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/12\/03\/millions-of-working-mothers-in-the-us-are-suffering-from-burnout.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">burning out<\/a> in record numbers, and for them, self-care is usually the first thing that drops off the to-do list.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there&#8217;s no easy trick to juggling life in the pandemic era, a little bit of exercise can go a long way toward keeping both mental and physical health in check. As Rebecca Vlam, LCSW, of Widener University in Pennsylvania <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/health\/4-ways-moms-can-prioritize-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">puts it<\/a>, &#8220;getting regular exercise is the most difficult, but probably the most important&#8221; factor in maintaining daily mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The great news is that even&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/health\/good-news-short-bursts-of-exercise-can-keep-you-healthy\/\">a small amount of exercise<\/a>&nbsp;can have a big impact on your physical <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/2720689\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and mental<\/a> health.<\/strong> \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/elemental.medium.com\/why-you-should-exercise-snack-throughout-the-day-d19341ee61d7\">Exercise snacks<\/a>\u201d done throughout the day may be short in duration, but they add up. Plus, they\u2019ll help build up your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jennifercohen\/2013\/11\/06\/motivation-is-a-muscle-the-7-best-ways-to-substantially-increase-your-productivity\/?sh=4fc830a911c5\">willpower \u201cmuscle\u201d<\/a>\u2014helping you get out of the emotional funk than can discourage you from working out, even if you <em>do<\/em> have the time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here are some ideas for fitting short bursts of exercise into your day without the burden of having to <em>make the time.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Household Chores<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It may seem like adding insult to injury to suggest you combine housework <em>and<\/em> exercise, but activities like cleaning, laundry, and dishwashing actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellfit.com\/how-to-burn-more-calories-cleaning-house-3495596\">burn significant calories<\/a>\u2014meaning, you&#8217;re <em>already<\/em> exercising! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who truly cannot find a way to set aside a few minutes to work out, try dedicating 20 minutes every day, all at once or in snacks, to the chores you have to do anyway. Rather than slogging through them begrudgingly, if you think of housework as an activity you&#8217;re doing for your health, you&#8217;ll be more likely to lean into the calorie burn and get the added benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bonus burn: <\/strong>Get more exercise out of your chores with these modifications:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Incorporate lunges into your vacuuming<\/li><li>Try some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockettes.com\/blog\/ballet-101-how-to-do-a-plie\/\">pli\u00e9s<\/a> or side leg lifts (straight-leg or bent-knee) while washing dishes<\/li><li>Folding laundry? If colleagues live nearby, consider a walking meeting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only has the CDC recommended walking as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/surgeongeneral\/reports-and-publications\/physical-activity-nutrition\/walking-executive-summary\/index.html\">optimal exercise<\/a>, but if you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/newsletter_article\/a-prescription-for-better-health-go-alfresco\">get outdoors<\/a>, you\u2019ll enjoy a lift in mood and a healthy shot of vitamin D as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Micro-Workouts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you spend your workday seated, the imperative of getting the heck up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juststand.org\/the-facts#the_research\">can\u2019t be overstated<\/a>. Peppering your day with timed \u201cmicro-workouts\u201d not only makes this easy, but over the course of a day adds up to the equivalent of a full workout! Plus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2016\/jun\/18\/how-physical-exercise-makes-your-brain-work-better\">research shows<\/a> that exercise improves focus and creativity, so while it might be difficult to tear yourself away from work, you\u2019ll likely end up with a more productive workday overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One easy way to start? <strong>Do 100 reps an hour of literally anything.<\/strong> There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.self.com\/gallery\/bodyweight-exercises-you-can-do-at-home\">dozens<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a706391\/free-weights-workout\/\">different<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifehack.org\/845046\/best-hiit-workout\">exercises<\/a> to choose from that don\u2019t even require equipment. Just do any combination that adds up to 100:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>50 jumping jacks, 25 squats, 25 push-ups<\/li><li>Alternating sets of 20 lunges and 20 sit-ups<\/li><li>100 mountain climbers\u2014why not?<\/li><li>You get the idea!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now pat yourself on the back, set a timer for 60 minutes, and get back to work. When the timer goes off, do 100 reps of something else! It only takes a few minutes, and it never gets boring.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t feel like thinking up your own routines? Apps like <a href=\"https:\/\/obefitness.com\/\">Ob\u00e9 Fitness<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fitonapp.com\/\">Fit On<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/7minuteworkout.jnj.com\/\">7 Minute Workout<\/a> offer on-demand workouts as short as\u2014you guessed it\u20147 minutes for when you need the motivation of a class environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get (or Foster) a Dog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dogs aren\u2019t just lumps of love covered in fur, but a great fitness companion, too. Owners of dogs, on average, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2017\/06\/12\/532625213\/dog-owners-walk-22-minutes-more-per-day-and-yes-it-counts-as-exercise\">walk 22 minutes <em>more<\/em><\/a> per day than non-dog owners. Dog walking offers a consistent routine and can lead to health benefits that include lower blood pressure and cholesterol and improved cardio health. Not sure about the commitment? Test the waters by fostering a dog\u2014but move fast, as <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/31e3e60e7ea6bc4566b0ee3998ab98a6\">dog fostering<\/a> has become wildly popular during the pandemic. If you\u2019re a cat person, you can certainly <em>try<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksongalaxy.com\/blog\/leash-walk-my-cat-ask-the-cat-daddy\/\">walking your cat<\/a>&#8230;but don\u2019t expect to break a sweat during your feline stroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Just go fast\u2014for four minutes, or four seconds&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A 10-year Norwegian study found that short bursts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/23\/well\/move\/high-intensity-exercise-workouts.html\">high-intensity exercise<\/a>\u2014no more than four minutes in length\u2014were associated with better health outcomes and longevity. If even four minutes of heart-pounding activity sounds like an eternity, a study published in <em>Medicine &amp; Science in Sports &amp; Exercise<\/em> found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/30\/well\/move\/can-4-seconds-of-exercise-make-a-difference.html\"><em>just four seconds<\/em><\/a> of high-intensity exercise boosted muscular and circulatory health and may have lifted mood, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are some snack-length high-intensity workouts you can try? Well, you can do just about any type of cardio exercise for a few minutes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sprinting on a stationary bike&nbsp;<\/li><li>Taking the stairs (but fast!)&nbsp;<\/li><li>Sprinting around the block&nbsp;<\/li><li>Jumping rope or doing jumping jacks<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wsVSn0vcECc\">Burpees<\/a> (AKA \u201cmilitary drills\u201d)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?rls=en&amp;tbm=vid&amp;q=hiit+cardio+workouts&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiLqPX3vsTuAhXStlkKHTx9A2IQ8ccDKAN6BAgxEA8&amp;biw=1461&amp;bih=939\">Inspiration is everywhere<\/a> if you\u2019re looking for more creative high-intensity workout ideas.
