Sterols and stanols are naturally occurring substances found in plants. They are chemically similar to cholesterol and are a subgroup of steroids.
Scientists have discovered a way to manufacture these healthy nutrients and add them to the fat in foods - these new sterols and stanols are called sterol esters and stanol esters.
How much you should have: Take 2 grams per day. Pregnant and nursing women should not take sterol and stanol supplements, just to be on the safe side. These plant diet supplements are most effective in people with slightly high cholesterol. They are unlikely to have much of an effect in people with normal cholesterol.
