Treatment Basics

Other names: The mini facelift is also called the mini lift, the mid facelift or the S-lift (after the incision made, which is in the shape of an S).

The mini facelift focuses on the middle area of the face, below the eyes. Although a shorter and less invasive procedure than a full facelift (giving rise to the nickname "lunch hour lift"), the mini facelift is not a minor procedure.

The surgeon typically repositions the fat pads of the cheeks, which sag with age, as well as the underlying muscles. Mini facelifts are typically effective at reducing nasolabial folds and jowls. It is also called the mini lift, the mid facelift or the S-lift (after the incision made, which is in the shape of an S).

What It's Good For

The mini facelift smooths wrinkles and lifts sagging skin that affects the middle region of the face. It is typically effective for reducing nasolabial folds and jowls.

Who it works for: When middle age strikes, weakened skin elasticity and muscle tone cause unwanted sagging and creasing of the jowls and the nasolabial folds. A mini facelift can be a tremendous help when these first signs of age begin to appear.

Sagging skin and wrinkles that effect the cheeks and jowls may be erased with the mini facelift, though it is most successful when a patient's skin is still pliant.

Recommended age range: Mini facelifts are best done when the patient's skin is still resilient - the ideal age is between 35 and 50.

When will I see results?: Swelling and bruising may muddle the final effects of a mini facelift for three to four weeks. After this time, you should be able to fully enjoy the restorative results.

How long it lasts: The mini facelift is not as aggressive as a full face lift, and results may only last for five years.

Key benefits of mini facelift: Because of the small size and the location of the incisions, the risk of visible scarring is less than that of a full facelift.

Who's Done It?

It can sometimes be difficult to tell which celebrities have resorted to mini facelifts and which have used Botox injections to tighten the midface. There has been speculation that Katie Couric has had a mini facelift, and Madonna is widely thought to have had the procedure as well, as she was seen leaving a plastic surgeon's office with bruising in the areas that would be affected by the procedure.
