It is important to know what caused the problem. See a medical professional about your lack of iron. Make sure you eat adequate fiber along with the iron supplements. Calcium can also inhibit iron absorption. If you take calcium supplements,space the iron and calcium supplements out separately and switch to calcium citrate.

Most people believe that spinach or other green leafy vegetables is the answer to low iron. However, that is not the only choice. Protein, such as red meat, chicken, turkey, or pork are great sources of iron. If you are a vegetarian, try beans (any kind) or peanut butter. To help your body absorb iron, make sure to eat iron rich foods with vitamin C. Examples include having a hamburger with some vegetables or fruit (vitamin C). Another option is to have iron fortified cereal with a glass of orange juice.
