What's the difference between laser teeth whitening and bleaching?
Dr. Seay on Aug 29, 2011
Laser whitening is an in-office treatment that utilizes a light source to activate the whitening gel that is applied to the teeth. It is typically a higher strength of whitening gel and care must be taken to protect the gum tissues, lip and tongue from any exposure to the gel. It usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour under the laser but procedure setup from start to finish can take about an hour and a half.
Custom made whitening trays are made by your dentist to fit your teeth specifically and a professional strength whitening gel if often included with the cost. The gel is then applied to the inside of the custom tray and you wear the tray for about one hour for a few days or until you achieve the results you want. Once you are as white as you need to be then you can touch up your whitening about once every 3 months.
Custom trays offer better predictability for results since you can control the amount of whiteness. You can also maintain the color of your teeth easily as well. Many people have a few teeth that are darker than their other teeth so the trays allow you to apply the gel only to the teeth that need to brighten up some more.
