Information And Treatment
Arhritis is a chronic condition involving the inflammation of joints. There are several types of arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease. In cases of RA, the body’s immune system attacks the tissues that surround the joints, causing pain, swelling, stiffness and weakness. RA is sometimes accompanied by fever and fatigue. Osteoarthritis is a fairly common joint condition caused by the breakdown of cartilage. It can be caused by aging or injury.
Health and wellness treatments are good supplements to conventional medical treatment for RA, including dietary changes aimed at reducing inflammation (such as the addition of fish oil and turmeric to the diet) and stress-reducing therapies, including massage and yoga. One study featured by the American Massage Therapy Association found that a regular regimen of Swedish massage reduced flare-ups of RA and alleviated pain.
While common remedies for osteoarthritis include steroid injections, surgery and medication, a NIH study showed that treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee with acupuncture was effective at alleviating pain and improving joint function. A study by the Yale Prevention Research Center also showed that Swedish massage eased pain and improved mobility in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.
