Can microdermabrasion get rid of acne scars?
Jean Dachnowicz (New York, NY) on Nov 8, 2011
Yes, it does. But it depends on how deep the scars are and how many treatments you receive. Red marks from leftover acne will usually disappear after one treatment. However deeper scars will take more visits, as we have to remove more skin. Sunspots will fade, and overall tone and texture will greatly improve with microderm treatments. At my office we have dermatologists on staff who can advise on lasers or chemical peels that might give faster results for deeper scars.

Although microdermabrasion can soften skin tones, it has no long term impact on improving acne scars. Conversely fractional laser resurfacing and filler agents can lead to permanent improvement in your acne scars.

Microdermabrasion can help, but a better choice for pitted acne scars is the injection of small amounts of filler.

Microdermabrasion is used mainly to improve the superficial surface of the skin. It removes debris and the thickened keratin layer. It really does not improve acne scarring which is embedded in the deeper portion of the skin. For acne scarring you need to use an ablative laser. But understand that while some acne scarring can be improved they will not be eliminated.
